Founders and chief strategists, Birgit Pauli-Haack and Steve Hart, have together or separately worked with authors, business owners, non-profit organizations, companies and, even, political campaigns helping those clients establish, validate and exhibit leadership while also leaning forward to grow and expand the clients’ reach.
First Impression? It's online these days.
Let’s face it, many people these days research individuals online before or immediately after meeting someone new. One’s online presence is just as important, if not more important, than that fabled “first impression” we leave in a personal meeting. Many people these days turn to online tools to seek confirmation of an initial impression or to research a person prior to that first meeting. Online validation has become just as important to many as intuitive judgments. The depth of one’s expertise and the good one does in the community can shine authentically beyond business. That “first impression” is often today the first page of Google search results.
A community leader approached us recently with a peculiar problem. The executive director of a valuable non-profit organization, she found herself in meetings time and again with potential donors who wanted to know more about real estate than the work of her non-profit organization. She was perplexed because she has not worked in real estate for over a decade. Her leadership style for the non-profit always put its work ahead and above her personal presence so it could be sustained without her at some future point. She stayed in the background while the organization shined.
This was definitely to the benefit of the organization in the short term but today, in a world influenced so heavily by social networking on the Internet, people really want to connect online with people and not with an organization. Because our community leader had taken such a low-key path her enduring online presence was formed by little more than remnants of different time and era. She quickly came to recognize, genuine humility aside, the online success of her organization in the now and future would need to be tied to her own online presence. Her personal brand online is inextricably linked to the online brand of her organization. Remember, people want to connect with people, not merely an organization.
Each case of personal branding is different, of course. Each path different. Our initial interviews with prospective clients help us recognize aspirations and goals. We, then, build a plan to help our clients make that first and lasting impression online and personally.

Over the last 17 years we have seen websites, companies and personal brands evolve. A good rate of update the visual look and feel comes with evolving web presence as well as different content management strategies. Sometimes, people spend a lot of money and time on an elaborate look and feel but, somehow, find the website stale. Form (= Design) follows content. If you are not yet sure which particular content strategy you are pursuing, and are in an experimental mode, a designer will have a difficult time creating a design to last, mature, grow. If you are bootstrapped in your online efforts, placing much more emphasis on content strategy, production and distribution will allow you to build an audience, based on the quality of content; and your designer of choice will then be much better able to work with you on your website’s design.
The designer will find it much easier, of course, to simply follow your instructions when creating designs but the design might not be the right for your content.
