Seriously, why have a website if it's only going to be a billboard?
Why engage the tools of social media if you're only going to point your audience to that boring billboard? Why are you wasting my time? Why are you wasting YOUR time?
Your website is a very valuable tool in today's online world and like any tool it is worthless unless used properly. And by, "properly," we mean effectively and by, "effectively," we mean use the damn website to post content, tell your story! Let the world know just how magnificent you are. We don't know just by looking at you.
Posting fresh content to your website is an essential practice on today's InterWebzez. It's the blog, maaaaan, your content.
We've preached the value of content before – and will again – but, hey, if you don't believe us believe this:
Nearly 70 percent of consumers prefer to learn about a company through a series of articles posted to the web (meaning: a blog, your website content) rather than in an ad.
Not persuaded? Try this: 90 percent of consumers find custom content (blog) useful; and interesting content (blog) is one of the top three reasons people follow brands on social media.
Once you've made posting updates a regular part of your day – and, no, not an additional part of your day – you'll start to get the hang of it. You'll start, too, to know and understand your audience. (That's right, you just might build up an audience, a community.)
Know your audience, discover who they are; learn about them and what they like and appreciate. Make friends. It's called "social" media for a reason.
And a particular function you will want to take seriously is Google's Authorship program.
Because Google's new search algorithm, Hummingbird, will elevate in search good, authentic content (along with social signals and other elements) it is only logical the author of that good, authentic content should also be elevated in search and recognized as something of an authority on what he or she writes or posts to the InterWebzez.
Old websites with little or no shareable content, no updates in the form of blogs or other original content (words, photos, videos) are going to be left behind as the InterWebzez move forward in sophistication, reach (mobile) and effectiveness.
Google Authorship is a way to establish one's cred, not only for search but also for general trustworthiness and dependability. Creating your Google Author profile is really very simple. Just follow the steps outlined here.
